The suffusion of fine particles through the matrix of coarse particles plays an important role in the failure of embankment dams. A "transparent soil" technique is being deployed to investigate this process. The transparent bed is prepared using hydrogel with water as the fluid medium. Flow and the movement of particles are tracked by DIC.
