Title: Effect of nose shape on penetration of a transparent colloidal surrogate for clay

Author (Talk): Abdelaziz Ads, NYU

Abstract:

Torpedo piles are used to anchor offshore drilling platforms to soft marine clay. We have been studying the effect of geometry on torpedo penetration and extraction. The clay is simulated with laponite, a transparent colloid with clay-like rheology. This paper will describe experiments and results aimed at understanding the difference between penetration with conical and hemispherical noses.
