Title: The hysteresis and irreversibility transitions in cyclicly sheared amorphous solids.

Author (Talk): Craig Maloney, Northeastern

Abstract:

Cyclically sheared amorphous solids reach terminal states which are, in order of increasing cycling amplitude: i) trivially elastic, ii) hysteretic, but microscopically reversible, or iii) irreversible and diffusive. These three regimes have been identified in amorphous 2D rafts of polystyrene particles, particulate computer simulations, and meso-scale elasto plastic models (EPM). We call the transition between regimes i) and ii) the hysteresis transition and the transition between regimes ii) and iii) the irreversibility transition. In this talk, we will discuss the results of an EPM study -- going up to many tens of thousands of shear cycles -- to precisely quantify the scaling behavior near both the transition points and show evidence for 2nd-order transitions for each with distinct scaling exponents.
